Limes

Frontiers of the Roman Empire (limes) is a unique site, measuring over 7500 km in length. Presently, its archaeological remains are part of common heritage among twenty – one modern European, Asian and African countries, all pertaining to a single multinational site. As such, it has encouraged an attempt enlist it as UNESCO World Heritage under this common title. Hadrian’s Wall and Antonine Wall in Great Britain and Upper German Raetian limes are already World Heritage sites. The preparations are taking place in other European countries, mainly Slovakia, Hungary and Austria, so that their respective portions of the Limes can be included in the aforementioned Site in the next few years. The Republic of Croatia officially applied its National section of the Limes on the tentative list to the World Heritage Board, and soon the Republic of Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria will submit their application for the first time.
